Synopsis:

Motivational Interviewing (MI) refers to a non-judgemental and non-confrontational counselling approach developed by Professor William R Miller, Ph.D. and Professor Stephen Rollnick, Ph.D. to engage clients who are hesitant about making positive behavioural changes. It focuses on the present and works on engaging the clients’ intrinsic motivation to change behaviours that are inconsistent with their personal values or goals. This can be achieved by increasing the clients’ awareness of the negative impact that could arise from their current dysfunctional behaviour, and encouraging them to think differently about their actions as well as consider what could be gained through positive behavioural changes.
