How can volunteering enrich your life?
There are 8760 hours in a year. Ever wondered how can you spend your time meaningfully? According to a research on the health benefits of volunteering (2007), one needs only to commit at least 1 or 2 hours a week in order to receive positive health outcomes.
Here are how volunteering can enrich your life:
- Making a difference – Big or small, any help makes a difference, even something as simple as sorting out donated items.
- Cultivating a sense of gratitude - Many studies have shown that helping others makes us feel good. OECD Better Life Index suggests that volunteers tend to feel more contented with their lives.
- Making new friends – Meet new people with shared interests can lead to new friendships and a broader social support network.
- Learning new skills – Apart from gaining valuable experience in something completely different, volunteering is a great way to explore a new career or a particular industry, without any long-term commitment.
- Boosting mental & physical health – Evidence suggests that people who volunteer their time not only feels more socially connected, hence warding off loneliness and depression but also contributes to lower blood pressure and a longer lifespan.
