Signs and symptoms of gambling addiction

Do you find yourself:

  • Gambling more often than before?
  • Gambling for longer periods of time?
  • Gambling with larger amounts of money?
  • Gambling in spite of the problems it's causing you at home and at work?
  • Gambling to escape from emotional problems, worries or frustrations?
  • Telling lies to cover up your gambling?
  • Borrowing or stealing money to gamble?
  • Feeling restless and irritable when not gambling?

Consequences of a gambling addiction

Compulsive gambling can be very destructive. Some gamblers end up stealing money or liquidating family assets so that they can continue gambling. Naturally, this affects their relationship with their family. Gambling addiction can also cause:

  • Stress, anxiety and depression;
  • Sleeplessness;
  • Feelings of guilt;
  • Anger; and
  • Increased suicide risk.
